MRI in muscle disease

Muscle MRI is becoming increasingly used to describe phenotypes and follow disease progression with or without treatment in numerous neuromuscular diseases. Using Dixon technique, fat replacement of muscle can be quantified objectively and using STIR or T2-mapping, signs of inflammation can be identified and followed. We are currently using MR techniques to 1) assist in unravelling contractile properties in a number of muscle disease, 2) to describe pattern of muscle affection in limb girdle muscular dystrophies, Kennedy disease, congenital myopathies, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, carriers of dystrophin gene mutations, and hypokalemic periodic paralysis, and 3) to follow patterns of inflamed muscles with sequential scans in patients with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy type 1.
